Tips for Hiring a Contractor

The responsibility of the contractor/service provider is:

  • To provide value, quality, reliability, and an exceptional work ethic.
  • To perform their work in a timely manner, and clean up after themselves.

The responsibility of the homeowner is to determine:

  • Who are you hiring?
  • Does the contractor/service provider have the qualifications and expertise to meet your needs?
  • Do they have or need a license?
  • What licenses or permits are required for your community/association/city?
  • How many years have they been in business?
  • Are your personalities compatible? If not, you may not be comfortable working together. This is important to the success of your project.
  • Will the company stand behind their work (warranty/guarantee)?
  • Will the contractor work within your timetable, in a timely manner?
  • Most contractors work on mor ethan one project at a time. Ask your contractor about his schedule and how it will affect your peojct.
  • Is your contractor/service provider insured? Bonded?
  • GET DETAILS IN WRITING. Start and completion dates; what materials will be used; a statement regarding add-on expenses; down payment and payment terms.

Make sure all costs are explained up front, however, home improvement is not an exact science. Expensive, hidden problems can be uncovered once work has begun. Plan a 10% cushion before beginning your project.

Price is an important consideration in hiring a contractor. However, it should not be the deciding factor. Equally important factors to consider should be: years of experience, qualifications, ability to communicate, and your comfort level in working with a particular company.
