"It's not easy being Green"

Kermit the Frog sang that once, but Kermit was singing about something entirely different than the Green we’re talking about today. Today Green refers to building practices and sustainability. Green means stewardship and responsibility. It’s real and it’s about time. So what about it?

When people discuss Green home improvements the first question asked is, does it cost more? Yes and no! A Green built window costs a little more but it saves heat, a washing machine costs a little more but it saves water and soap, a light bulb may cost a little more and it lasts longer. So really, Green saves money, landfill space and use of materials.

Here's some tips and thoughts on Green.

Think global, buy local:Work with local professionals who don't have long drives to the job(and benefit from their local knowledge).

Here in the Midwest there are window and cabinet builders close to the Twin Cities.

Small is better: Instead of building a big addition, consider better use of the space you have. And it will be cheaper to heat and faster to clean.

Consider recycled or green materials: From cork flooring to countertops made locally.

Find a building pro who shares your values: If the environment really matters to you, work with a contractor who shares those values.

Green isn't cheaper up front, the payback is savings down the road and a healthier home and environment. How much more does it cost. 4% to 6% is what the experts say. Long term savings is much more in energy, health, environment and home resale.
